The grass is crunching under my feet as I walk across the yard. We haven’t had rain in weeks and dust has covered my car. The land is so dry that it doesn’t take much to start a fire. The nearby hillsides are slowly burning, and smoke has filled our valley. I love a campfire or even a good bonfire. The hills on fire, well that’s a different story.
The smoke makes it hard to breathe. Our clothes and hair smell like smoke. We are forced indoors to escape and find relief. Our allergies are going crazy. We are praying for rain.
What about our spiritual lives? Have we become dry spiritually as well? Do we need a good blaze of fire to clear out the underbrush in our lives? Or a flame of revival instead? What about a refreshing rain? Maybe we need it all.
Do you need a fire?
Sometimes a hot burning fire is necessary for survival. It clears out all the dross. The dried up areas of our life that keep us from living the abundant life that God has planned for us. Fires can bring revitalization, renewal, and revival. A fire can clean out those things that are not pleasing to the Lord. Those things that are holding us back from serving God wholeheartedly.
Do you need a flame of revival?
Life is hard. There is too much to do, and you are super busy. Maybe overwhelmed might be a better description. You are tired, weary, and distracted. Whatever has drawn you away, it is time to come back. Don’t stay in a state of spiritual lack. Let the dryness you are experiencing be a trigger for a flaming fire.
Revival can start with a spark. Let a spark ignite and become a consuming flame that rises in your soul. It can become a blazing fire that spreads to those around you. Changing a family, changing a city, changing a nation.
Do you need a refreshing rain?
You are dry. You are thirsty. Like a hot summer day that has zapped your strength, you need refreshment. If you could just get a tall glass of ice water, you would feel so much better. Only this is different, and only one thing can quench that thirst. Your soul thirsts for the living God, and He is the one, and only thing can satisfy your spirit.
If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scriptures has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ John 7:37-38
Are you dry? There is a river of living water. Jesus says come and drink. Ask the Lord for whatever you need today. The fire, the flame, the rain. Ask Him. He promises to pour out His Spirit on dry ground. Ask.
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. Isaiah 44:3
May the Spirit of God fall fresh on you today. Let His Spirit sweep through your life and may you never be the same. Let Him make you new. May you be saturated as He fills you with His presence and quenches your thirst. May the dry ground become rivers of living water refreshing everything it touches.
